At Thaden School, Design Functions as a Tool to Advance Student Learning

August 13, 2024
The Bentonville, Arkansas, independent school showcases the possibilities that occur at the intersection of design and education

On the eastern edge of the Thaden School campus in downtown Bentonville, Ark., the bright red recreational space known as The Barn commands attention. With its soaring and angular frame, it cuts a striking visual contrast with the lush green of the surrounding trees and grass. At night the building’s effect is just as dramatic: Golden light streams out through rooftop skylights, open roller doors and gaps in the barn’s cypress siding.

Inside, form follows function. Students gather for basketball or volleyball games played in natural light and ventilation, on a court designed for versatility.

The Barn at Thaden School was recognized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) with an Educational Facility Design Award in 2023.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) described The Barn at Thaden School as "a modern interpretation of a classic Ozark gambrel barn." It is built alongside a cyclocross course and pump track and connects to Bentonville's extensive system of trails.

"By reconfiguring the profile of an Ozark gambrel barn to maximize the height below the trusses, a variety of sports can be accommodated, including volleyball, basketball and cycling, while also providing bike storage and support facilities," ArchDaily.com wrote in 2022.

The Barn was awarded Architect's Newspaper's 2020 Best of Design Award in the Institutional K-12 category.

The building is one of a half dozen on the 30-acre campus that epitomize how high-quality design can inspire and support academic performance and student well-being.

Since its opening in 2017, the independent school – which currently serves 325 students – has won numerous design and architecture awards. Thaden has been celebrated for creating a sense of place that connects its students and campus to the neighboring community and builds sustainability into the learning experience.

Its design draws inspiration from the culture and agricultural history of Northwest Arkansas, reinterpreting and incorporating Ozark forms in ways that advance Thaden’s signature Meals, Wheels and Reels programs.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) praised the Performing Art Center's "versatile and efficient allocation of space," saying it "advances the school’s identity as a stage for improvisation and experimentation."

The Performing Arts Center follows "an 'urban pastoral' strategy common in Arkansas in which long, narrow buildings are oriented to control exposure to the intense sun of the American South," the American Institute of Architects (AIA) wrote.

The Performing Arts Center was painted green and gold to symbolize two native ecosystems - the Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve and the Osage Prairie. The colors were also meant to invoke the metallic green and gold paint of 1960s automobiles.

The Walton Family Foundation supported the design of the Thaden School through our Northwest Arkansas Design Excellence program. Its campus master plan, school buildings and landscape are designed by award-winning architects Eskew+Dumez+Ripple of New Orleans and Marlon Blackwell Architects of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

A 2020 report by Gehl, an urban design firm, praised Thaden’s design for enabling an innovative curriculum that blends indoor and outdoor learning throughout its campus.

“With state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, outdoor learning spaces, indigenous landscaping, hands-on maker spaces, and preservation of the historic home of aviation pioneer Louise Thaden, Thaden School thoughtfully integrates cutting-edge design into a historic story, creating a landscape that promotes growth of the whole student,” the report said.

In a report on Thaden, Architect Magazine noted the school "aims to facilitate learning experiences that keep students connected to the land." It added: "Not unlike the buildings on area chicken farms, each structure is long and narrow and runs east-west to circumvent overexposure to sunlight and promote natural ventilation. Strategic bends in the buildings create framed exterior gathering spaces, encouraging students to interact with the landscape."

Thaden School's master plan won an AIA Regional Urban Design Award in 2023. "Across the campus, students are encouraged to achieve balance through motion as they engage with the landscape throughout the day," the organization said. "A similar attitude for circulation is reflected in the way the buildings are distributed. In most schools, classrooms are supported by specialty areas, such as gyms and libraries, that are tucked into corners. The school’s philosophy prompted a different approach, so the academic programs are sprinkled across the landscape. All of them include their own lab or maker space where students can integrate the movements of their minds and hands."

Architect Magazine noted Thaden "is modeled more on a small college campus than a monolithic middle or high school building. Students are expected to move between buildings over the course of the day, with many classrooms and work areas designed to be able to spill out onto adjacent outdoor areas."

In addition to The Barn, Thaden’s campus is anchored by its Home Building that hosts the heart of all student activities, as well as the Performing Arts Center, the Reels Arts and Administration Building, and the Wheels Science and Fabrication Building, which includes a Bike Lab. Pioneering Northwest Arkansas aviator Louise Thaden’s childhood home, McPhetridge House, was also relocated to the campus.

"The Home Building serves as both the social and spiritual center for students," ArchDaily.com wrote. "Like the hearth of the campus, the building provides an expansive dining hall, where all of the campus comes together for meals, as well as a teaching kitchen, the student bookstore, a library, and several unstructured lounge and study spaces."

Thaden's Home Building "takes visual cues from the region itself, with board and batten facades and all-wood construction incorporating the beauty of local, vernacular architecture," wrote ArchHello.com.

“Thaden’s design enables and encourages new kinds of learning—with the campus acting as a third teacher and social facilitator,” the Gehl report said. “For example, the Greenhouse provides a space for hands-on ecology lessons, the Great Hall forges social bonds among students sharing meals together, and the hallways encourage chance encounters and social mixing among students and faculty. The campus design not only facilitates distinctive curriculum needs but elevates them.”

"Covered areas extend student workspaces out of the building, connecting with the outdoors and displaying activity to the Campus and the community."

This invitation to think of the student environment as part of the curriculum has led students to engage in design thinking even off campus. This was evident in a recent Thaden School class project to improve an intersection near campus. Students met with city officials to present a plan to improve pedestrian safety at a dangerous traffic intersection northwest of the school and in 2023 received approval to install crosswalks, stop bars and pedestrian flags.

“Thaden School is challenging convention when it comes to school design,” the Gehl report said. “With a belief that the environment is a crucial part of the student learning experience, Thaden has broken away from typical classroom design to provide an elevated experience.”
